Stay Tuned for Black Jungle update and Bonsai

We're kicking off winter break by starting our Paludarium and vivarium projects. I'm converting my 65 gallon tall tank from a freshwater community to a paludarium, maybe a biotope. Other projects include a mudskipper tank, improving my frog tanks and whatever else gives us inspiration. The first step is to visit Black Jungle in Turners Falls, Massachusetts.

We've been talking about how awesome the store looks, based on its online presence which includes the most incredible selection of plants and supplies as well as information on setting up vivaria. Emmett came up with the idea that we should visit the retail outlet so I'm planning on using the opportunity to write a review.

Bonsai

I was given a bonsai tree from my aunt, which is something I've wanted for a long time. I'll have to do some research on how to keep it healthy. Comments with your ideas and experiences with bonsai would be thoroughly appreciated. I'll keep you updated on how it goes.

Magic Isle Aquarium - Centereach and Gargoyle Update

Overall, a well stocked store that will keep a freshwater enthusiast happily supplied. During today's visit I was disappointed only with the plant selection which, while still as good as some stores, was not as amazing as usual. Besides for the usual tetras, "sharks," mollies etc there were several tanks of cichlids (I almost came back with a dempsy) and some oddballs and hard-to-finds. Most notable were the rainbows fish, different puffers, archerfish and various crustaceans. The discus display tank was stunning, definitely worth checking out. Saltwater section was less impressive, with a small selection of corals, a lot of live rock and pretty standard as far as fish go. They wouldn't be my first pick to look for salt water stock. I would also caution against buying from their reptile sections, which is small and tucked away in an "employees only" glass room. If you have a good idea about reasonable prices and what to look for in an animal than you might get a really good deal, but if not then you could get stuck with a bad pet for a bad price.

The Equipment/accessory selection was great. There were plenty of filters and other maintenance items to choose from as well as an assortment of rocks and deco. A lot of tanks in the front ranging from small nano-cubes to a 90 gallon with stand and hood. I know from past experience that they will sometimes have deals on pre-used tanks so that's something to look out for. I can't provide a comment about pricing since I wasn't looking to buy anything. Also, the staff did not offer any assistance while we were looking so I can't comment on how knowledgeable they are.

I would recommend this store as one of my favorites in the area. While you're there you can check out the best bargain books store next door or grab a bite to eat at a nearby restaurant.

Gargoyle update

I just moved my Gargoyle lizard into a ten gallon tank (formerly inhabited by the kingsnake I traded for it). I used a mix of eco-earth style bedding and vermiculite, which I thought would help retain moisture and add volume. I have a few patches of live moss and a few of dead sphagnum for looks and to help with humidity. I gave it a big stick and English ivy for climbing and a semicircle bark hide. I hope it enjoys the new digs!
